Freka Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) Pro is suitable for patients at risk of aspiration and/or gastric motility disorders and used for long-term intragastric feeding.

Freka PEG is available in a range of gauges with the
option of two intestinal tubes (9 FR for PEG 16 FR & 12 FR for PEG 20 FR).

Each intestinal tube comes with the
option of an ENFit/ENFit connector to allow the use of a single ENFit syringe type for feeding or aspiration or the traditional ENFit/funnel connector.

The
Freka gastropexy device II (available separately) allows attachment of the gastric wall to the abdominal wall with sutures.

Freka PEG Pro & intestinal tube: Key features

Freka PEG Pro is an evolution of the well established Freka PEG and available later in 2024.  It comes in a wider range of sizes (12/14/16/20 FR) than the original Freka PEG while maintaining the same quality and design that has led to longevity of 68.5% at five years (2).

Freka PEG Pro includes the redesigned safety puncture cannula to minimise accidental injury which also has a safety air valve built in to assist with retaining the insufflation of the stomach.

The fixation plate is designed for a low profile fit with the feeding tube being directed flat against the skin.

Freka intestinal tube, 9 FR for PEG 16 FR, comes with a pigtail to minimise the risk of dislocation in-situ.  Both intestinal tubes come with ENFit/ENFit or ENFit/funnel connectors to allow options for use of a single ENFit syringe type if required for feeding and aspiration.

Clinical excellence

Use of a silicone PEG feeding tube was associated with a higher 28 day complication rate (19/57) compared to a polyurethane PEG catheter (9/51). This finding is of particular relevance when PEG feeding is used for a short term e.g. perioperatively.

Longevity
In another study (2), looking at the longevity of Freka PEG's placed in 277 patients with a median age of 74 years (IQR 59-82) PEG longevity was:

3 years: 79.6%
1 year: 95.1%
5 years: 68.5%
Bard PEG: 19/57
Freka PEG: 9/51

Short term complications
In a randomised trial (1) the short term complications associated with polyurethane vs silicone PEG catheters was studied.

51 patients received a polyurethane Freka PEG resulting in:

  • 6 difficulties in placement

  • 3 PEG complications post-placement

57 patients received a silicone Bard PEG resulting in:

  • 2 difficulties in placement

  • 17 Silicone PEG complications post-placement

In summary, the Fresenius Kabi Freka polyurethane PEG:

  • has lower short term complications that the silicone BARD PEG (1)

  • is a suitable long term option for patients (68.5% survivability at five years) (2)

Freka PEG Pro tubes are secure and effective for the provision of enteral nutrition.

1 year: 95.1%
3 years: 79.6%
5 years: 68.5%
