Freka PEG & intestinal tube: Key features

Freka PEG has been designed to make insertion effortless with safety in mind.  Innovative tools aid in improving safety for all such as - the puncture cannula with safety air valve, safety scalpel for incision and thread cutting or the introducer cone with double thread to assist in the pull method of insertion.

Freka PEG is made of biocompatible polyurethane and has been proven clinically to have excellent longevity results of 68.5% at five years (2).  The tubes include a tube clamp with side walls to minimise "false clamping" and a soft silicone fixation plate for patient comfort.

The fixation plate is designed for a low profile fit with the feeding tube being directed flat against the skin.

Freka intestinal tube, 9 FR for PEG 15 FR, comes with a pigtail to minimise the risk of dislocation in-situ.

Short term complications
In a randomised trial (1) the short term complications associated with polyurethane vs silicone PEG catheters was studied.

51 patients received a polyurethane Freka PEG resulting in:

  • 6 difficulties in placement

  • 3 PEG complications post-placement

57 patients received a silicone Bard PEG resulting in:

  • 2 difficulties in placement

  • 17 Silicone PEG complications post-placement

Use of a silicone PEG feeding tube was associated with a higher 28 day complication rate compared to a polyurethane PEG catheter. This finding is of particular relevance when PEG  feeding is used short term e.g. perioperatively.

Longevity
In another study (2), looking at the longevity of Freka PEG's placed in 277 patients with a median age of 74 years (IQR 59-82) PEG longevity was:

In summary, the Fresenius Kabi Freka polyurethane PEG:

  • has lower short term complications that the silicone BARD PEG (1)

  • is a suitable long term option for patients (68.5% survivability at five years) (2)
